Our Strategic Focus

Advocacy

As the only authoritative and collective voice of blind and partially sighted persons in Africa for more than thirty years now, AFUB continues advocate with various stakeholders to influence inclusion of needs and concerns of blind and partially sighted persons in their programs and services.

We particularly also target women and youth to build their capacity as self-advocates to exercise self-determination and self-representation.

Through its human rights project AFUB has been able to achieve its objective of protecting and promoting the human, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of people who are blind and partially sighted in Africa. As a result of this project we have recorded significant changes in the use of the CRPD as an advocacy tool. The inclusive education project has seen hundreds of boys and girls in Burkina Faso, Lesotho, Liberia, Swaziland and Mali access basic education. AFUB is actively carrying out a campaign for the ratification of the Marrakesh treaty in Africa so as to end the book famine and allow access to published works to blind and partially sighted persons and those with print disabilities.

Membership development

To strengthen the capacity and role of national member organizations in promoting the rights of blind and partially sighted persons in their countries, AFUB offers technical and financial support to these members through workshops, exchange visits and seminars. The current project to strengthen Lusophone countries has seen Angola, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, and Sao Tome & Principe improve their advocacy work towards influencing their national governments.

AFUB is also strengthening the participation of its member organisations in the Sustainable Development Goals, SDG Voluntary National Reporting (VNR) processes.

Organizational strengthening

In order to effectively deliver on our advocacy and coordinative roles in Africa, we have maintained strong governance, management and administrative processes. These serve to drive the work of the Union towards achieving its purpose. We currently have ongoing initiatives around organisational strengthening funded by the Danish Association of the Blind, DAB and Disabled People’s Organisation Denmark, DPOD. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening the financial sustainability of the organisation.
