Promoting African Disability Protocol Project in Congo, Brazzaville

As part of the materialization of the project promoting the Rights of the Blind and Visually Impaired in Africa through the Protocol of the African Charter on Disability, AFUB delegation led by Mr. Lucas AMODA, Acting Executive Director of UAFA and Program Officer for the ADP project and Mrs. Bernice OTIENO, in charge of resource mobilization and communication at UAFA,arrived in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo on . The launch and opening ceremony of the workshop was punctuated by five (5) speeches delivered in turn by:

Mr. KOKOLO Claudier, President of UNAMAC, who first welcomed and thanked the guests for their availability and that their presence proved their interest in people with disabilities.

Mrs. Thérèse KAMANGO, Representative of AFUB for Central Africa region said that this project is the fruit of the efforts of good relations between UAFA, its partners and UNAMAC.

Mr. Lucas AMODA, first greeted and thanked the institutional authorities present in the room as well as the participants. He focused his intervention on the history of the project, presented the eight (08) selected countries namely: Cape Verde, Lesotho, Togo, Ghana, Angola, Sao-tome and Principe, Malawi and Congo. Finally, he sketched summary on the protocol.

Jean de Dieu GOMA, Permanent Executive Secretary of the Consultative Council for Persons with Disabilities, said that this initiative addresses the concerns of the Advisory Council since the development of the human capital is constituted by persons with disabilities and their Institutional partners, remains an essential resource for the attainment of the objectives related to the Promotion of the Rights of Congolese men and women in this social category.

Jean Clotaire TOMBY, Solidarity Advisor, representing the Minister of Social Affairs, in his speech welcomed the initiative of UAFA and that the ratification of this protocol is an obligation for all African states. Congo has been engaged in this process since 2020 on the basis of article 31 of the 2015 Constitution. Today, the two (2) chambers of our parliament voted the law authorizing the ratification of the said protocol.
