Malawi: AFUB organizes training on African Disability Protocol (ADP)

The training presents an insightful opportunity for participants to increase their skills in lobbying and advocacy” President MUB, Mr. Moses Yohane.

Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) hosted the official launch of the ADP training from 23-25 November 2020. The workshop is part of AFUB efforts to build the capacity of men, women and youth as self-advocates and to exercise self-determination and self-representation. The workshop focused on Human Rights /African Disability Protocol with the aim of improving the capacity of the Malawi Union of the blind within AFUB to achieve its mandate more effectively.

Speech made by the Special Advisor to the Office of the President on Disability Issues Hon. Overstone Kondowe a person with albinism called upon unity of people with disabilities to achieve the intended goal. As plan of action, he endeavours to lobby government of Malawi to sign and ratify the protocol before his term ends. He expressed his optimism on the government commitment to uplift the welfare of people with disabilities.

By the end of the three-day training, participants gained substantive understanding of content in the African disability Protocol and its significance to persons with disability. Presentations were made on techniques and strategies of lobbying the government towards ratification of the protocol. In depth discussion on the thematic areas stimulated debates on role of religious leaders in advocacy process.
